What is the housing requirement at EKU?
EKU offers many residence hall options from which you may choose.
All single, full-time, undergraduate students under the age of 21, having fewer than 60 hours, or less than four academic semesters living on campus, are required to live in university residence hall facilities. Exception is made for students residing with their parents in the parents’ principle residence within 50 miles of the Richmond campus as determined by an official state map. Full-time students must be 21 years of age, have completed 59 hours prior to the first day of class of any given semester or lived in campus housing for four academic semesters to live off-campus for that semester. Students failing to meet this requirement will be assessed the lowest price residence hall fee and board fees where appropriate.

An additional Living with Parent Verification form must be completed to request the exception. Falsification of information subjects the student to applicable fees and/or disciplinary procedures. Regardless of age, certain regulations apply in residence halls. The University reserves the right not to contract with persons who are currently violating the terms and conditions of a housing contract, who have previously violated the terms and conditions of a housing contact, who have violated University rules or regulations, or who have a past due balance with the University.

How do I apply for Housing?
Apply by going to the University Housing website at www.housing.eku.edu there you will find directions on how to apply online for housing. Once you apply on line mail in your remittance form along with your $100 deposit.  If you do not have access to the web you may contact the housing office at 859-622-1515 and request a paper application you will then return the application along with your $100 deposit.

Please note: The student must be admitted as a full-time, undergraduate student before the Housing Application/Contract is sent. Return it with the $100 reservation damage deposit to: Student Accounting Services SSB CPO 60, Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond, KY 40475. The housing deposit is required before a reservation can be made. Assignments are made on a space available and date of deposit received.

Do you have Family Housing?
Yes. The Family Housing office is located in the Facilities Services office located in the Gentry Building. They can be reached by calling 859-622-1520. This is a separate office from the Housing Office. You can also email Family Housing at Harold.Denham@eku.edu

May I request a roommate (same gender)?
Yes. When you submit your housing application, you should include your preferred roommate's name and EKU Student ID number. If each student submits this information, it is then mutual and will be considered when an assignment is made. This request is a significant factor when assignments are made, but deposit dates are also a factor. We suggest that students listing each other as mutual roommate requests mail their applications and/or deposits in the same envelope so they receive the same date of deposit.

What is the difference between private, double, and suite rooms?
The majority of the rooms on campus are double rooms, meaning that two students occupy the room. Private rooms can be requested (see: May I request a private room?) and are assigned if space is available. Suite rooms are located in Telford and Burnam halls, and are two rooms that share a common bath between them. Eastern also has rooms that have been adapted to accommodate students with special needs.
TOP
May I request a private room?
Yes. However, private rooms are allowed on a space available basis and no guarantee can be made. {New privates are not granted for incoming Fall semesters.) There is an additional fee for a private room and the fee may be added after the initial bill depending on the time the private room space becomes available. If private room space is not available for your original assignment, space may become available during scheduled room change periods. An additional Private Room Agreement will need to be signed. To cancel a private room, you must write a letter to the Housing Office stating the cancellation of the private room postmarked by the cancellation dates. Canceling a private room may require reassignment. Private rooms are not available in the halls where the Connextion Program is housed.

When will I receive my room assignment?
New student assignments are made after returning students have completed a renewal process by their appropriate deadline. Assignments are based on the date the reservation/damage deposit, application, and contract are received. New students entering for the fall semester should receive their assignment letter from June to August. New students entering for the spring semester should receive their assignment letter prior to the start of the semester. Assignment letters contain hall, room assignment, and roommate information. We encourage students to contact their prospective roommate to get acquainted.

Assignment letters are sent by mail. However, students who apply 6 weeks (or less) before the semester may have to come to the Housing Office, Student Services Building Room 552, in order to receive their room assignment and when halls will open prior to the beginning of classes. Assignments are based on available space. We make every attempt to accommodate the preferences listed on the application. We cannot accommodate all requests. Many students do receive their hall and roommate preference if they and their roommate have early processing dates.

What if my roommate or Living and Learning floor is different than I requested?
We hope that you are happy with your roommate. College provides an opportunity to meet new friends and to spend time getting to know people from many different backgrounds. Limited space is available, so we cannot always guarantee that we can honor a change request. A letter of notification will be sent to the student's permanent address if the request is processed. Due to the volume of students we are attempting to accommodate, changes are not made after room assignments have been mailed. After the school year begins, room and/or roommate changes may be made during scheduled times. A student may contact his/her Residence Hall Coordinator for assistance and information.

When can I check in for any semester?
Check in at each residence hall begins on the date specified on the University calendar and ends at 5 p.m. the day before classes begin.

Don't be a No Show. Failure to check in by 5 p.m. the day before classes begin will result in cancellation of the student's assignment and forfeiture of the $100 reservation and damage deposit. Arrangements for late arrival check in (after 5 p.m. the day before classes begin) must be made in advance through the Housing Office during office hours or by contacting the Residence Hall Coordinator at the assigned residence hall front desk after opening and prior to the deadline.

TOP
Can I get my money back if I cancel my housing?
Yes, provided you are eligible and follow the proper procedure: In order to cancel your housing and be eligible to receive a refund of the $100 reservation/damage deposit refund, a request in writing must be submitted to the Housing Office. This request must be postmarked by the specified deadline for each semester to be eligible. The cancellation deadline dates are outlined in item VII of the Housing Contract. No refund shall be made for applications or cancellations submitted after these deadlines.

Additional limited housing during break periods may be available for an additional charge to residents who request such accommodations and who meet University Housing designated criteria.

Who cleans my room?
You. Each student is responsible for cleaning his/her own room. If living in a suite, the suite resident(s) must clean the suite bathroom. A member of the custodial staff cleans community baths and the common areas. The Custodian is an important member of our community and a person worth getting to know. Hall staff on a regular basis conducts a room inspection for safety and health.

Where can I find a good place to study?
The Library has excellent facilities and resources for EKU students to utilize. Specific rooms and areas in the halls are designated for study, and all halls follow the established courtesy and quiet hours:

Daily Quiet Hours - 9:00 p.m. to 8:00 am
(The hall councils may vote to extend these hours.)

TOP
Where can I find the rules that I need to follow while living on campus?
Rules that students must follow while at EKU are printed in the Guide to Residence Hall Living, the University Handbook, Housing Contract, and other university publications. Many publications are available at residence hall check in, with others being available in the Student Affairs office or at Housing Office.

What is consolidation?
Consolidation is the process by which students in a double room without a roommate are relocated into a new room. Relocation relieves the remaining student from the need to pay for the room as a private room. This process occurs and continues throughout each semester.

Students receive a series of letters explaining the process and are requested to meet with an EKU Housing assignments staff member to receive assistance. This process is necessary to provide for more efficient use of space within the residence halls. It allows additional space to be used to meet student requests for private and special purpose rooms. Students failing to consolidate will be charged the private room fee.

What is visitation/open house?
Visitation is a time when a guest is permitted to visit with you in your room. All guests must register at the front desk and be accompanied by the resident who lives in that residence hall. You may only register a guest in the hall in which you live.

Residents with non-registered guests or who fail to escort guests while in the building will be subject to judicial action. Residents who host guests are responsible for the actions of their guests. University Housing staff reserves the right to limit the number of guests checked in at one time.

Any guest under the age of 18 who is not an EKU student must have advanced permission by the Residence Hall Coordinator to visit. Underage guests may not stay in the residence hall as an overnight guest.

Visitation hours in non-extended visitation halls are from noon until midnight, Monday through Wednesday. Extended visitation begins at noon on Thursday and continues through midnight on Sunday. You and your guests will need to follow guest check in/out processes as outlined in the Guide to Residence Hall Living.

Combs Hall and Clay Hall have extended visitation 7 days a week. The residents in these halls need follow the guest check in/out processes.

If I need help whom should I contact?
The Resident Assistant (RA) is available for help and lives within your community. There are a number of RAs in each building and you should feel free to go to any of them. The other staff member in your building is the Residence Hall Coordinator (RHC). The RHC is a live in professional staff member who is available to assist you with any issues that you may have.

Does the University insure my belongings?
EKU does not insure personal belongings and does not assume liability for theft or damage. You are encouraged to obtain renters insurance to insure your personal property. You may already be covered if your parents have a homeowners or renters insurance policy. You may want to check with them.
