Resident Assistant Position Description
Division: University Housing
Reports Directly to: Residence Hall Coordinator of assigned hall
Pay: $1116.00 stipend per semester and a private room at reduced rate
OBJECTIVE: The RA is responsible for the overall development of a community
atmosphere on the floor(s) he/she is assigned to.
DUTIES:
I. Student & Community Development
· Assist residents in adjusting to roommates, floor mates, the
residence hall and the University community.
· Establish, develop and maintain an open relationship with each
member of the floor community.
· Conduct floor meetings on a regular basis with a minimum of a
floor meeting before every building closure and at every semester opening.
· Work cooperatively with residents to maintain the rights and
privacy of all residents.
· Encourage resident involvement on campus, especially through
Residence Life Council (RLC) & Hall Council.
· Understand and utilize University resources to assist students.
· Maintain information center on the floor you are assigned.
II.
Programming and Activities
· Provide a minimum of 1 pre-planned program per month. These programs
are to be a mixture of Community Development, Community Service and Educational
at the discretion of the Residence Hall Coordinator of the building.
· Complete spontaneous programs and community development activities
on a regular basis.
· Support & participate in other RA, Hall Council, & RLC
activities by attending organizational meetings and programs.
III.
Crisis Management
· Carry out departmental guidelines for helping residents and dealing
with emergencies.
· Respond appropriately as outlined in the RA manual and according
to University Housing policies and procedures.
IV.
Administrative Functions and Duty Coverage
· Be on duty for the building one night per week, from 6 p.m. to
8 a.m., Fridays 5 p.m. Responsibilities include but are not limited to
rounds (3 sets Sunday through Wednesday; 4 sets on Thursday through Saturday),
interacting with students, and assisting with lock-outs. All duty nights
require the RA to be present IN the building and accessible by a local
telephone number if not in his/her assigned room.
· Provide weekend coverage for the residence hall an average of
one weekend per month. Weekend duty includes coverage during all hours
of the weekend with one break given during the day as granted by the Residence
Hall Coordinator on duty.
· Provide Holiday coverage as equally distributed among the RA
staff for each building.
· Attend and actively participate in weekly 1-1 meetings with assigned
Residence Hall Coordinator.
· Attend and actively participate in weekly building staff meetings.
Be available to attend departmental scheduled events during one of the
following days and times: Tuesday 2-4 p.m., Wednesday 4-6 p.m., Friday
10 a.m.- noon.
· Complete 4 desk hours per week.
· Perform all administrative assignments by given deadlines. It
is required to check EKU E-mail, Room voicemail, and RA box daily and
respond to messages in a timely manner. This includes but is not limited
to: hanging flyers, distributing and collecting surveys as instructed,
weekly reports, check-in and check-out paperwork, and work requests/room
condition issues.
· Participate in hall opening and closing each semester. You will
be the first to arrive and the last to leave.
· Participate and complete all assignments in all training sessions
as instructed by the RHC (this includes but is not limited to structured
in-service type classes, and additional training before classes resume
each semester).
· Assist the RHC in monthly room inspections.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
V.
Facilities Operations
· Assist students in understanding policies and procedures related
to facility services.
VI.
Student Conduct
· Enforce all University regulations with consistency and fairness.
· Confront individuals or groups participating in violations of
University Policy.
· Assist students in understanding the impact that inappropriate
behavior has on others.
· Document and refer all disciplinary situations to the Residence
Hall Coordinator (RHC) in a timely manner.
· Attend Judicial Committees as scheduled by the Office of Judicial
Programs..
VII.
Personal Requirements
· Maintain a 2.25 gpa or better.
· Must be at least a second-year student.
· Must have lived on campus at EKU or another University for at
least one semester.
· Must reside in the residence hall assigned and sleep in the residence
hall assigned Sunday through Thursday night. Permission may be granted
by the Residence Hall Coordinator for exceptions
· Greek RAs must not be a member of a Greek community located within
the building. An RA choosing to become Greek after his/her placement may
be moved at the discretion of the Area Coordinators.
· The RA position is considered primary above all other activities
except academic work. RAs may work at an outside job, however, for no
more than 12 hours each week.
· Role model a healthy lifestyle.
· Abide by all policies and procedures as outlined in the Guide
to Residence Hall Living and the University Handbook for Students.
